Choosing an IPL or vascular laser
IPL is the most flexible light source for its price. One handpiece and a set of filters moves the machine between hair, pigment, redness, acne and photo-rejuvenation, which is why it is often the first light-based device in a clinic. What separates IPL units is the number of filters supplied, the size of the treatment window, the cooling at the contact surface, and the flashlamp's rated life, because the lamp is the consumable.
A 980nm diode laser does one job that IPL does not do well: individual small vessels. It delivers a single wavelength through a fibre to a spot of a few millimetres, so the operator traces a vessel instead of flashing an area. It is a low-cost, small machine, and it adds a treatment most general clinics currently refer out.
The two are complementary rather than competing. IPL treats diffuse redness across a cheek; the 980nm laser treats the distinct vessel that remains. Clinics that buy one for the redness market usually find the other earns its place within a year.
